From July 16 to 22, 2024, Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia, became a hub for youth empowerment as participants gathered for a transformative training course under the project “Play to Participate – Participate to Play.” This initiative addresses the critical need for young citizens to engage actively in social and civic activities, particularly within sports and community decision-making. The project aims to create a participatory system that promotes youth activities focused on political and social issues, utilizing sport as a vehicle for engagement. By empowering young people to participate in decision-making, the project seeks to ensure their voices are heard in shaping the solutions that affect their lives. Key Objectives of the Course:
The training course was designed with specific goals in mind:
- To promote equal opportunities and active youth participation.
- To encourage young people to engage in decision-making processes.
- To provide platforms for youth to express their opinions on relevant issues.
- To foster cross-sector cooperation among youth and sports organizations.
- To highlight the role of Erasmus+ and the European Union in developing engaged and active citizens.
Course Highlights:
Over the week, participants engaged in a variety of activities aimed at enhancing their understanding of youth councils and their importance in sports organizations. Highlights included:
- Exploring Needs and Expectations: Participants shared their motivations and fears, fostering community and collaboration.
- Understanding Youth Participation: Sessions focused on the governance and structure of youth councils, discussing both the challenges and opportunities in establishing these bodies.
- Simulating Decision-Making Processes: Participants took part in simulated youth council meetings, allowing them to practice the skills necessary for effective governance.
- Creating a Practical Guide: A significant outcome of the training was the development of a draft manual designed to serve as a practical guide for establishing Youth Sports Councils. This manual outlines essential components such as the council’s mission, roles, values, member recruitment strategies, and funding resources.
The course culminated in discussions on strategic planning for youth councils, where participants developed actionable strategies and explored follow-up support mechanisms to ensure ongoing engagement and impact. This training not only equipped participants with the skills necessary to foster youth engagement in their communities but also reinforced the importance of collaboration and shared experiences in driving positive change. As these young leaders return to their communities, they carry with them the tools and confidence needed to advocate for their peers and contribute meaningfully to the democratic processes that shape their lives.
Through initiatives like this, the project “Play to Participate – Participate to Play” is paving the way for a new generation of empowered youth, ready to take their place as active citizens in society.#P2P #YouthEmpowerment #SportForChange #ErasmusPlus #YouthParticipation #VrnjackaBanja #CommunityEngagement #ActiveCitizenship #YouthCouncils #SportsLeadership
